Artist Statement
I create abstract paintings in an intuitive and impulsive manner
with dripped ink and thinned paint. I use the liquid quality of the
material to form flower shapes or repetitive drips as a ground for
my work. The visual result is inherently unpredictable; the medium
helps direct the painting. The element of the accidental allows
freedom and spontaneity. Painting in, over, or around the dripped
areas with flat paint, brings contrast, balance, and meaning to the
paintings, rescuing them from fragmentation and chaos. Geometric
shapes and figures bring order and structure. Repeated circles
reference growth, nature, and infinity; flowers refer to life and
death, and perceptions of what can be beautiful. The flowers are
inspired by the memory of my sister, Gina, who passed away. I paint
the way I feel when I remember her, which moves my subconscious
toward expressive awareness.
